Brain Imaging and Autism

New research in the field of autism has found that GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter,   A researcher at the Harvard Society of Fellows has shown that reduced GABA action in the brain may contribute to sensory difficulties individual with autism experience.

20 neurotypical control participants and 21 participants with autism spectrum disorders. were show a series of images, one in each eye.  The participants were asked on just one image.  The researchers found that individual's with autism were able to perform the task, but it took them much longer.

Brain imaging showed that GABA levels were much lower when those with ASD attempted the task.

Researchers believe that variable levels of the neurotransmitter GABA may be linked to behaviors that are often seen in Autism Spectrum Disorders.
